Kinematics of Syllable Structure in Tashlhiyt Berber: The Case of Vocalic and Consonantal Nuclei
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study provides evidence from the coordination of articulatory gestures, using electromagnetic articulography (EMMA), in favour of a heterosyllabic analysis of word initial clusters in Tashlhiyt. Evidence from calculations of C-center and Rightmost C to a following anchor in the syllable as well as the stability index consistently supports the predominant analysis amongst phonologists of Tashlhiyt that this language permits only simple onsets. These timing patterns hold regardless of whether the syllable nucleus is vocalic or consonantal.

Gestural Coordination in Tashlhiyt Syllables
In this study we investigated the coordination of consonantal and vocalic gestures in Tashlhiyt Berber as a function of their subsyllabic constituency. The aim was to determine whether the syllabification proposed of word initial clusters is reflected in the coordination of articulatory gestures. Two main results were obtained: (1) The timing of consonants in word initial clusters in relation t...
متن کاملImdlawn Tashlhiyt Berber Syllabification is Quantifier-Free∗
Imdlawn Tashlhiyt Berber (ITB) is unusual due to its tolerance of non-vocalic syllabic nuclei. Rule-based and constraint-based accounts of ITB syllabification do not directly address the question of how complex the process is. Model theory and formal logic allow for comparison of complexity across different theories of phonology by identifying the computational power (or expressivity) of lingui...
متن کاملThe Nature of Vocoids Associated with Syllabic Consonants in Tashlhiyt Berber
Tashlhiyt Berber has entered the phonological folklore as an unusual language in which any consonant can be syllabic, many words consisting entirely of consonants. I shall argue for an alternative analysis, according to which the epenthetic vowels which frequently accompany syllabic consonants are the phonetic realizations of syllable nuclei. Where no epenthetic vowel is evident, it can be rega...
متن کاملSyllables without vowels: phonetic and phonological evidence from Tashlhiyt Berber
It has been proposed that Tashlhiyt is a language which allows any segment, including obstruents, to be a syllable nucleus. The most striking and controversial examples taken as arguments in favour of this analysis involve series of words claimed to contain only obstruents. This claim is disputed in some recent work, where it is argued that these consonant sequences contain schwas that can be s...
متن کاملOn the phonetic status of syllabic consonants: Evidence from Slovak
Our paper investigates the phonetic correlates of syllable structure focusing on syllabic consonants. Cross-linguistically, syllables containing consonantal nuclei are often subject to a number of restrictions compared to their vocalic counterparts. However, some languages, like Slovak, allow relatively freely distributed syllabic liquids. Phonetic studies of syllable structure have shown that ...
